Hi everyone!

We finally finished migrating / learning (how) / to create the new site, completely done in Wordpress. You can access the new home of the project addresses: detaillibrary.org or detaillibrarycommittee.org.

For now there are only old posts on this blog, but next week we will begin a series of posts on the new path that the project will follow and about a animation project we started, with an average of one posting per week.

We apologize for the delay, but we're COMPLETELY newbies creating websites, even when it is well automated and with beautiful interfaces (like Wordpress).

We thought long and hard before choosing our hosting services, thinking about the future of the Library and its Projects. Now we have the necessary space and infrastructure that the project requires!

Thanks for all the support and do not forget to spread the word. =)

Hi!

Many of you already know that our project touches different concepts of "open technology and creativity". For this reason we decided to migrate to the blogging platform Wordpress. The migration is already being done and should be ready in early December (though we do not know the wordpress manage, we are learning now... =)). Hopefully, we finish the move, have our own blog on our server and our new domain: detaillibrary.org. The domain we already have, but for now he directs to this blog. Use it to access our site, so when the new blog is in the air you "fall" into it. =) When we finish one last note posted in this blog. Thanks to Blogger for the excellent service so far!

A migração já está sendo feita e deve ficar pronta no inicio de dezembro (entenda que não sabemos gerenciar o wordpress, estamos aprendendo agora... =)). Esperamos, ao terminarmos de migrar, ter nosso blog em nosso proprio servidor e com nosso novo domínio: detaillibrary.org .

Back to the present!

Hello!

As you (readers of this blog) must know, last week we've been attending the Blender Conference 2010 to present our new (and crazy) project to the community. And now, here we are, back to Brazil, to tell you how it went. (That's after we arrived and went almost directly to our classrooms where our students were waiting for us.) it was a rough arrival!

We went to the Netherlands with our heads in the clouds (not just literally), thinking only in presenting our project and sow the feedback from people. After all these years, mainly in the last months, all our thoughts are around this project. In one instance, it was very pretentious of us to think that this was the thing to care about: to present the project. Luck for us that we have this wonderful community that, not only make this incredible tool, butl also reminded us again of what really matters: The community itself and the interchange that it provides. And that is very appropriate, once our project is about community and all the things that can be developed trough interchangeability. We forgot that for a moment but you were very quick in reminding us - and for that we are very thankful!

The event was great. It was wonderful to be in a place where ideas converge to common points and everybody speaks in the same language. And speaking of that, we had some trouble with our messy english, but people seemed willing to understand so that was ok. We were astonished by the quality of the presentations and with the competence of the participants. Congratulations to each and everyone of you.

Unfortunately, (or would be fortunately?) our presentation didn't go as we expected and due to a series of reasons that will go by without further explanation (one of them being plain and simple anxiety), we ended up disappointed of how the whole thing went. Nonetheless, to our surprise, the people that where there watching us came down and started asking us more about the project, and they seemed really interested!!
Thanks to all of you that showed interest in our presentation and in our work.

Once the presentations were done we went for the real deal - food and drinks!! That's when we managed to get to know each other better. And we would really like to thank some of you particularly for being such nice guys: Dalai, Nelson, Raimon, Kapil, Thomas Thoma and his brother, Adji, Francesco, Luca, Wolfgang, Hugo, Ramon, Pablo - let's go for a bite to eat (and a pint) sometime! It was a great pleasure getting to know you let's please keep in touch.

And finally, there's Amsterdam. What a nice place. We enjoyed not just the nice museums, but people everywhere where very nice to us. We have tons of pictures, and we were amazed by how the place looks so much with the island-city of San Corisco that we have imagined. Unfortunately, we weren't able to visit the Blender Foundation on Monday, but next year we hope we'll be there!

Once again, thank you so much for everything. And as we promised, here goes the files for the presentation - in 3D (we used BGE to create the slides), in PDF and the presentation text in ".rtf" and ".odt".

More than one short! - Mais que um curta!

About one year ago The Detail Library stopped being only about an animated short, and now the project involves the connection of multiple narratives. Anyway we choose to start off with animation. For that reason we antecipate the next productions. We already have the animatic for the second short and we're working on the script for the third.

Changes in Project, BlenderNation and...

We update the post about "The Project" (link also on the side) to better describe the direction the project is taking.

All this because our project was reported at BlenderNation site, to our surprise! = D
Thank you, BlenderNation, for the news. It means a lot to us!

If not for the BlenderNation putting us on the news of the day, so we would probably post something when we had something very big and important to communicate (and we have such kind of news to report, but we expect that certain things are confirmed before talking about them).

And... In the coming months we will know for sure about many things, including the types of financing the project will have.

Raising funds

Last month we've kept ourselves busy with the presentation of the the Detail Library Project in order to try and get some fundraising. One of the pieces of the presentation is a little teaser trailer. The production of a propper teaser, with the 3D models and sets would costs us a money that we don't have (it's a fundraising initative after all), that being said, we've went for an intermediary solution. We've cutted a teaser out of our animatic and did some make up work on it - coloring the sets and redrawing the character. It will not just help our future sponsors to visualize the project, but also have helped us to padronize the design of our main character. The following video is a compilation of some of the parts that we've used for the presentation, to avoid spoilers some parts have been removed. The segment of the music theme was composed by Marcio Brant specialy for the production, and as the animation, the music is only a preview and will finalized as soon as someone drops a coin in our hat.

The real thing

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the delay again! (I swear I'll stop talking about it...)

For our new project (from which we still can not talk much about) we've asked a friend from work, Edvaldo Vieira, who's very good with modeling - to make a statue of the main character in the short: Gadanthara. Gadanthara is the strange figure dressed in the yellow raincoat, he is an employee of The Detail Library (in the history).

Edvaldo (or Eddie) is an excellent artist who has done work as designer and sculptor for large enterprises. The only problem is that he doesn't have his work published on the internet! =P

We've asked him how was the experience of work in this model:

"I really liked, was very nice to work on something different from my usual work (superheroes and advertising). The designs of Eduardo Damasceno are very different even from the animations that go out today. I really want to (when I have time) make more models for the project!"

And we love the result! Actually we like so much that we are reviewing the model and RIG of the character thanks to the excellent work of translating the 2D to 3D design that Eddie did!

Ooops, we did it again. =P
Our last post was in November 25, of 2009! That's months already! We apologize again for that. But this time, we apologize in a more appropriate way: showing you new work we've been doing in the short!

Just to not leave anything blank, we should say that we finished the project: Pirates x Ninjas x Robots x Cowboys. The pilot was not among those chosen to become the TV series, but the work was praised and the kids liked it (hey, this is what matters!). =)

Ok, so we finished the AnimaTV project. And, among other things (like experience), we gained the opportunity to work in a production company with experience producing live action movies and TV shows: Abuzza filmes.

And now we're in a production house, so we are obligated to produce. And what is the project that we've been waiting to get going? The Detail Library, of course! So begins our plan for world domination: We did the bible of the project and prepare it for fundraising, either trough government culture incentive laws and edicts, or in other ways (we can not comment yet). All this is leading the project to other directions, we will still do the short, but we want it to result in "much more" than the production files released under a Creative Commons license.

The direction the project will take now is still uncertain, but know that we're working hard on it. When we have news we will post (hopefully it will not take so long this time).

But as I said before, this post is not just to give you the news, we will also show some work. During the last months we were working on things that would help the project look more "attractive". Each one of us (Me, Daniel and Damasceno) then had a specific work: Mine was to do a preview of how it would be the final look of the film. Attention to the word PREVIEW: The image you see below is just that, a preview.

So I kindly asked to our beloved art director Eduardo Damasceno to paint a concept art to guide me and serve as a starting point. Also sat with our director, Daniel Pinheiro, to decide which view of the city to use. We decided for a key point in the short, but before it get's to boring, let's concept art:

Deciding the location and with the concept art in hand I could get to work. I started checking all the material we had already done, finishing the buildings, poles and started making new constructions and posters. For the modeling and texturing of some buildings and poles I had the help of another artist: Diogo Coutinho. João Paulo modeled the character. Then came the assembly of all in one scene (using the wonderful Link system in Blender) and lighting. And was on the lighting and scene layout that I had more work: there were many elements, we had to portray a dirty town, polluted by posters but in a way that we could still read the image without getting lost. Not to mention an art director who speaks the same way he paints: intuitively. (don't get mad at me Duda. = P)(duda: my statements are clearer the the Himalayan mountain tops in the summer). That was a big challenge, took time, but I think we reached a good result:

We've had a total of 89 versions to reach that result, and I saved every one, here is a video showing the entire process of creation:

What's been up

Hello there, it's been a long time (ok, long long long time), but here we are , in order to tell you allthat's being going on. By the end of 2008 the project went on a halt, that happened mainly because we couldn't afford to keep working so many hours on it and still pay our bills... everybody was quite sad that we couldn't go on working on it like we were. But our hopes were renewed by the idea of organizing the project and trying to make some money so we could pay everybody that had been working on it. At the same time, other projects appeared that demanded our attention. Some of us were trying to get a project approved at AnimaTV a government program that supports the production of animated TV series, (I'll be back on that later) and others were studying and/working their asses off.

One thing that aways inspired us and motivated us to continue our work on the project was the comments and emails we received from people telling us what they felt about it, asking for more and basically wanting to know more about the Detail Library Project. All that kept us believing in the potential of the project. One of these people that aways made sure that we knew how much he liked our work was Mark Puttnam, from animux. So when he asked our help in creating a teaser for his upcoming project “Prince Harming to Prince Charming” we were very glad to help him out. We wouldn't be able to be completely compromised with his hole project, but we were very excited about helping out with the teaser. It was quite a chaotic process, a global team working together to get everything done in a few weeks, in order for the teaser to be shown at sigraph 2009. A handful of talented technicians and artists each one working in a different place of the globe, it was a very interesting experience and we hope all the best for the team. As said before we couldn't continue completely committed to the prince harming project, that was because of AnimaTV.

Now, about the AnimaTV
We didn't get any project approved on AnimaTV, but we were lucky enough to become the team responsible for the production of one of the projects pilots that were selected: Pirates x Ninjas x Robots x Cowboys. And we've been very committed to it. The pilot (as all of our other projects) is being made solely with open and free software: Gimp, Inkscape, Blender and Scribus for the project's bible. Here you can see some of the early art and some stills. And that's what we have being doing nowadays. We can't wait to get our hands back on Gadanthara. We are now thinking of ways to gather money so we can work more at ease at the Detail Library Project.

Snakes Can Fly HD!

Hi all!

We are really sorry for the lack of posts (again). To many "things" going on for the Team, but these "things" will be topic of another post. (soon I hope) =)

Today I have the pleasure to announce that our short Blender Ad - Snakes Can Fly - is on line in HD. No, not only the video file, but the complete 3d scene! All Licensed in Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported! =D
Not only that, but we "fixed" the blend file to work with the newer version of Blender (2.49a) and improved the textures to work on HD resolution.
The only thing missing is the final animation (when the blender logo turns in "blender it") because it's done in GIMP GAP, not in Blender. But these files will be uploaded soon (and then we will edit this post).

The reason for updating the files is that the guys from Animux re-rendered the animation on HD resolution and will show it on Siggraph 2009! Awesome! =D

Mood Design

I know, it's been a while and we're sorry for that. The project keeps on going, altough slowly. That's a ligth, mood and color concept with our main character doing what he does best!

Blender PRO' 2008

Hi!

Long time no see (again)!

Well, this year passed quickly. Many things going on for every one, every where. Many of this things influenced our time (like studies and work) and the Short progressed slowly on the second part of 2008. Due to this lapse in time some decisions on the execution of the design where made, good ones actually. I really hope that in this holiday we will progress faster with most of the artists working at the same time (and posting more often here!).

Despite that some nice things happen and one of then was the Blender PRO 2008. "Blender PRO" is a Brazilian conference of Blender artists and developers, showing their works using our beloved 3d program. And guess who was there?! :)

Daniel and me (Filipe) where there showing our work with Blender. I showed how I teach CG 3d using Blender (the methodology and results) and Daniel made a nice presentation of the Paper Orange Project - The Detail Library. Daniel showed some progress that we didn't posted yet here and talked about the reasons and differences of the project on its inspirations (see the link on the right "About - The Project" for details).

The reaction of the people who were there was great! They where impressed by the quality showed so far by Daniel and asked some technical and non-technical questions.

I would like to thank the organizers of Blender PRO 08 and all its participants: Thank you!

Concepting

We had a lot of trouble concepting our little town for it has to be like an old pirate town. So we chose to put in some ancient buildings, thus creating a mood for San Corisco. Of course, the buildings, once beautiful and majestic, end up being just another place on which to poster some advertisement. Swallowed by publicitary sheets, San Corisco becomes a war zone for the visual pictures, each one fighting for some portion of the valuable space. Since advertisement is the key for success in business, shopkeepers, magicians, businessmen, showmen and the like spare no effort in making themselves known in the streets. In this scene, we tried to make our city a kind of stage for all this struggle to the top of the business pyramid.

There are some beautiful trees, used as a substract for the unmerciful publicitary advertisement. Those trees were probably placed once in a nicer context; however all the visual pollution kinda killed all the bucolic aspects of the town.

Now here is a train depot: the chaotic intertwined lines are meant to give the idea of a unplanned town, as if the building had been improvised.

Here is a concept of one of the houses, always trying to recall early XXth century buildings.

That’s one of the first concepts of a once beautiful square, in the middle of the town. Probably it should have some more trees, but it can be easily seen like this.

Posters, posters and posters.

First, some words about the basic purpose of a poster. Since its creation it is used to transmit any news, to decorate or simply to be nailed where can not.

Second, some words about the role of posters in the movie. Suppose the three basic functions of a poster: inform, decorate and occupy space. In the city of San Corisco the functions of informing and decorate became obscured by the enormous number of posters. And it is this huge amount of posters that I do.

Miles of posters will be developed for implementation in the short and all follow some basic rules for not to get lost in the midst of them:

-We must remember that the posters are of the century XIX and must have a design of that era; -To maintain some organization will be divided into three groups: first, second and third plan, according to the evidence that will in the movie;
-Each group will divide into subgroups of subjects.

Using as an example the theme News, responsible for exposing things, then, would be considered news, I show a poster for the launch of the Ketchup:

As you can see, there is the application of an old design, the logo of the subgroup News, the logo of the manufacturer and the traditional realistic picture that was much used on posters of the that time, besides an good layout (in colors and nostalgic typography) to create a agreeable poster.

In addition to exploring issues such as News, posters will be developed for manufacturers of absurd things, old films and other more that I will leave to say later.

I hope I have managed to pass for you as a bit of the posters have weight on the short and on our organization for their development. Any questions or something to add, I will be happy to answer your comments.

Gadanthara RIG

This is the RIG of our main character: Gadanthara.

As you can see in the video below, he's naked so far, but in the short we will make use of simulations in his clothes (thanks to the Dev who made Cloth Sim!). As these simulations will be made after the Animators finish the Shots, they will work with him naked. Well, not completely naked since he is wearing these cute boots. :)

Our first animation tests.

This is our main character, naked!

None of these animation tests are part of our short movie. They were made only to test the RIG of Gadanthara (the main character). Thanks to these tests we were able to find a lot of bugs and correct them. The RIG is quite OK now. We will post more animation tests soon.

Main Character's Design 01

In the process of finding the right look for our main character many things were tried and tossed away. Here's a part of that process and the final design for it. On screen you'll only see him with his raincoat on, although, during the design process I usually made him naked first, since he's body is so peculiar. And I really wanted the raincoat to be "on" something. Gadanthara (that's the name of our main character, later in some other post we dive deeper in story maters.) is quite a good challenge artistically speaking, his dark body in front of dark environments, the thin dark hands that need to be able to make subtle moves in a way that it doesn't end up looking like a black gloo or something. But he's quite the good guy, so we do what we need to make his world believable. Enjoy it!

In case you had not yet seen: Our Video page in Vimeo is updated with more animations made by some of the team members of The Detail Library Committee (as Daniel kindly calls us). Not all were made using Open-Source software because some were made a few years ago (when not yet had "migrated"), but most of them were (read the descriptions for more details on this).

Now to the project itself:

Sorry for the abstinence of posts... Most of the team are busy with work and study. But we are working hard here to get the base things for the beginning of animation. One of then is the Main Character RIG, and its almost finished! :D
You can expect a awesome video in "Nathan ("peach") style" from me when the animators say "OK" to the Rig. :)

I would also like to congratulate the personnel of the project Peach for the awesome work. Congratulations guys!

Our First Interview

If you look in some Comments in the two (or three) past posts you'lll find some preliminary conversations between me and "Dalai Felinto". Dalai runs a very nice Blog (in Portuguese) where he talks about CG and (of course) Blender. He made us some questions and three of us (Damasceno, Daniel and Me 'Dilly') answered.

He will divide it in Three parts, the first one is out and our Art Director "Eduardo Damasceno" is the chosen one. :)

Color Concepts II

The animatic is almost done, the first models are being made, but for now I'm posting more color concepts, it's nice to compare with the first ones (published in Sunday, September 30, 2007).

Probably now we can update the blog with more frequency, since we have a ton of draws.

Paper test

Short Shading / texture / Rig Test made some time ago (about one month). Things like render time and memory consumption was tested to. Several things are not so good: Like the "Edges" of the paper folds. But this shows how the paper can be in the short.

Made using development versions of Blender (Revision 13xxx, I think). Making use of things like: Mesh Deform Modifier and AAO and new Constraints. GIMP for texture manipulation.

This one is the last paper test, since we are aiming for a different design for the whole movie (in the original idea everything would be done as if it were made of paper). But make no mistake: we still have allot of paper on the movie and this "Paper" is crucial for the history of the short.

But design decisions, character concepts and other things are parts of the next posting...

We are still alive!

A couple of months passed and we didn't post anything here. But this not means that we are not working. We are working, but some things get slowed (mostly) because of Work/Job.

Things that are (or mostly) done:

- The script is finally done. We are still open to making some adjustments, mainly because of the design that the film will take.
- The "Production Roadmap" is basically ready. We must make some adjustments mainly because of how (and when) the Contributors will Contribute.
- The research on the techniques and tools that we need to use / learn is mostly done.

Now for the actual begin of the "heavy" production we need to finish de Animatic (hopefully this month will be done) and much more Concepts. Also a Meeting with all the Team and Contributors will be realized in the middle (or end, if late) of this month.

A small Announcement

This time its not about Paper, its about "clay" (na verdade é massinha... rs). Just letting you know that our "Blender Ad" its finished... and we just put it as a entry for the Suzanne awards 2007, wish us luck! :)

Mood Concept

Here's an early scenario/mood concept. The goal is to try to find a nice atmosphere with the light, shading, tones and a little dust. This one is a bit far from being ideal, but it's a good start I think.

Paper House

We already have a script. Now the animatics and the first test models are in production.
This is our first "paper house" test. The Goal of the tests are to produce Low Poly Models that reminds real paper models. Has been made by Diogo, one of the newest members of the team.

First Day (about us)

Detail Library started (in 2007) as the first open movie project of a small group of artists, teachers and students (the members of this blog), reunited just for the production of it. The purpose of the project was to use it as laboratory of studies for the pupils of the school of arts "Casa dos Quadrinhos" (located in Brazil) using only open source (and freeware when needed) tools like Blender and GIMP.

We call this project of: "Paper Orange Project". The "orange" name comes from the first open movie project, produced by The Blender Foundation: Orange. But the "Paper"... well, in the certain time we will show to you the reason of the "Paper".

In the last years the project has grown a lot, it's no longer just a short movie project. The Detail Library will be a virtual space of knowledge transit that allows the constant interconnection between elements that instigate narratives – Promoting, this way, the collaborative creation of entertainment products. The project began to rise it's conceptual structure in 2007, having Blender Foundation open movie projects as a major inspiration. Presently, the Detail Library Committee counts with the support of Abuzza Filmes Productions and the NGO Contato.

The project plans the creation of a creative and interactive content portal. The material will be organized as a virtual city – San Corisco – An open set in which creators can add graphic, symbolic or historic elements, making it a place for free art that is in constant growth.

It is intended for the Library to be a support trough which a collective narrative can be created and realized as entertainment products placed in the same virtual space. The products are responsible for the historical and cultural development of this space.

Throughout the whole process the use of free and open-source software is indispensable, once that all the files in it must be exchangeable. In this context, Blender becomes one of the main tools that allow knowledge and information sharing.

Main goals of the Paper Orange Project:

1- Create it in way that enforces the procedural development of knowledge
2 - Democratize the production of entertainment products
3 - Promote the development of a virtual space with it's own historic and cultural values, ones that are build from constructive points of view and philosophies.
4 - Drink lots of coffee.
